Alabama Pinhoti Trail 100+ Access Points

From Old Jackson Chapel Rd., GA. south to Flagg Mt., AL. 170.8 miles

Alabama trails association 12.5 mile section
Old Jackson Chapel Rd., Georgia south to US Hwy 278, Highpoint Trailhead.

Trail crossing at Old Jackson Chapel Rd., GA
At mile marker 3.1 on US Hwy 411, turn south on Jackson Chapel Rd.

Turn right at the chapel on to Old Jackson Chapel Rd. The crossing is about 2.7 miles south of Jackson Chapel.

(The private dirt road about 0.7 mile north of the crossing could be used by permission only.)

Private, gated, Hunt Club Gap dirt road.
Next to Salem Church (On Cherokee Co. Rd. 8 about 0.7 mile east of the trail crossing.) This is about a 0.8 mile pretty steep climb up to the gap but it’s the only access in this section)

US Hwy 278 Highpoint Trailhead
(about 0.2 mile east of Cherokee Co. Rd. 45)

USFS 138.6 mile section
US Hwy 278 Highpoint Trailhead south to Sweetwater Lake

Highpoint Trailhead
is east of Mile Marker 165 on US Hwy 278 about 7+ miles east of Piedmont, AL.

Access can also be from a gated log rd. about 0.3 mile east of the trailhead on Hwy 278. This log road goes around the east and south side of High Point Hill then crosses Lanie Creek. There is no other easy access to this 6.1 mile section until the crossing at Maxwell Gap.

Maxwell Gap Cleburne Co. Rd. 70.
6+ miles east of Piedmont, AL between Augusta Mine Ridge & Wilson Ridge.

Cleburne Co. Rd. 94
Terrapin Creek Valley & Chief Ladiga Trail. Access is off Co Rd 70 east of Maxwell Gap. The trail crosses Co Rd 94 & joins the rail trail for about a half mile.

South Fork of Terrapin Creek Dam
Access via west end of Co Rd 94, then Cleburne Co. Rd 204 & 220.

Access via closed log rd. about 0.1 mile south of the old fire tower rd. (closed FS 539) on Dugger ridgeline off FS 500. The trail joins this log rd. about 0.4 mile east of FS 500.

Jones Branch Rd.
(Gap). Abandoned log road is really not much shorter than just hiking the trail in from Calhoun Co Rd. 55 (Rabbittown Rd.)

(Calhoun Co Rd 55), crossing and Burns Trailhead.

Choccolocco Creek Dam
gated access road off FS Rd 532. Best to get gate unlocked by USFS. This provides easy access to shelter and dam crossing.

FS Rd 532-A
north off FS 532. From the north end of FS 532-A, take a steep bushwack north for about a quarter mile to the trail.

FS Rd 534 -B?.
A closed log road off FS 534 to the west provides access to where the trail crosses the south fork of Choccolocco Creek near an old logging, homestead, and whiskey still site.

Rd. 135 or McIntosh Rd. 3.2 miles to new gate, then another 1.1 miles of historic enjoyable walk to trail crossing. (It is about a 3.3 mile hike from the Scenic Drive down to the trail crossing.)

There are no good access points for the next 3.2 miles of trail until Porter Gap TH at Hwy 77.
HORN MOUNTAIN SECTION
There are at least 3 access points to the trail along gated FS Rd 621-A which pulls off of FS 621 just north of Porter Gap TH on Hwy 77. About 0.6 mile past the 1st gate on FS 621-A, follow a blocked log rd to the left, south. The trail crosses this in about 1/10th mile. About 1.1 miles past the 1st gate, park near the 2nd gate and follow an obscure log rd. sw to a major switchback in the trail. One can also just keep going on FS RD 621-A all the way to Scott Lake but I would not recommend that route.

REBECCA MOUNTAIN ACCESS POINTS

Mile Marker 11.3 on Al Hwy 148 Bulls Gap trailhead off FS Rd 607.

At mile marker 3.3, turn south on Trammel Motorway (FS 603). Go south on the gravel road for 2.5 miles and turn left (east) on FS Rd 603-A. Follow it for 0.5 mile and turn right (south) on unmarked FS 603-C.

Trailhead parking lot is about 0.1 mile on right. Trail comes close to FS 603-B about 0.2 mile east of FS 603-A.

Access is also at the junction of FS 603-B and FS rd. 675 (old log railroad bed).

Access points off Bull Gap Road (south of the ridgeline)
0.0Jct. of Bull Gap Rd, Chapman Rd., & railroad in Hollins, AL. (no trail access)
2.7Jct. of West Tower (Sage Gap rd.) & Bull Gap Rd. Turn north and go 1.0 mile to crossing at Sage Gap.
Bear left (west) on concrete paved rd. for a ¼ mile to the west comm. tower and trail.

5.3Jct. East Tower rd. (FS Rd. 680). It is about a half mile up this steep dirt rd. to White Gap & trail crossing.

From north to south this road walk route uses FS 603 (Co Rd 231),(crosses CR 511), Lakewood Cir., Azalea Rd., Red Bud Rd., Old Rockhouse Rd (CR 66), CR 150,(crosses US 280 & AL 21), CR 41, & CR 56. We will soon be working on about 8+ miles of new trail on the east side of Weogufka.
